Bethlehem Marketplace Dec. 13, 6-8 p.m.
Dec 3, 2009
For nearly two decades hundreds of area residents have made visiting the First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood Bethlehem Marketplace and Living Nativity a holiday tradition each year
It’s time again to celebrate the reenactment of the birth of Jesus Christ, as well as take a trip back in time to the marketplace of the era during this free event that the whole family can enjoy.
On Sunday, Dec. 13, from 6-8 p.m., community residents are invited to FPC-Kingwood to visit “Bethlehem” – stroll through the streets of the city and experience the marketplace; be counted in the census taken by the shepherds; hammer your own Roman coins; help the weavers make thread; practice Hebrew with the scribes; and even try the “bread of the day,” says Director of Adult & Lay Ministries Mary Lee Irwin.
“We really try to make Christmas an authentic experience by helping people visualize what it was like in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago,” says Irwin. “After they tour the marketplace, they can visit the stable by the inn and see Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, as well as the animals that were present during that time.” The live camel is always a big draw, says Irwin, as it’s “not an animal that children get to see every day here in southeast Texas.” Members of the FPC-Kingwood student ministry play the characters in the living nativity, which is accompanied by readings and music.
