Life During the Babylonian Exile & It's Influence on Jewish Thought

No single period has had as much influence on the development of modern Judaism as the Babylonian Exile of 605-539 BC. Was it truly the terrible event that is portrayed in Psalm 137? How did it influence the religious thought of those who returned from exile?  How did the Babylonian Exile influence the development of synagogues, the rise of Jewish “legalism” and the system of the Pharisees and Sadducees so prevalent in the time of Jesus? Does the Babylonian Exile continue to influence Jewish thought today?

Our own Dub Crook returns on Sunday evening, Aug. 9 from 6-8 p.m. to give a program on the Babylonian Exile and its lasting influence on the Jewish people. From the Great Processional Way, to the magnificent Ishtar Gate, to Queen Amyitis’ “Hanging Gardens”, to the crowded market places, come experience what life was like in the Neo-Babylonian Empire of Nebuchadnezzar. And, as usual with Dub’s teachings, real Babylonian artifacts will be an integral part of the presentation. So plan on joining us for this fun evening of archeology and the Bible as a compliment to our readings in the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Lamentations, and Daniel.
