Palm Sunday
Mar 28, 2010
Join us this Palm Sunday as the Choral Choir presents Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria.
The Gloria, the great doxology (hymnus angelicus) in the Mass, is an ancient hymn of praise addressed to the persons of the Trinity, each in turn. The opening line of the hymn is taken from Scripture (Luke 2:14), where the angels announce the birth of Christ to the shepherds. The hymn from his exile in Phrygia (360) and introduced the hymn to the Western Church. The prayer has been an integral part of the Mass since the 5th century. The Gloria is one of the only remaining liturgical prayers that were composed by private persons instead of being comprised exclusively of scripture. There are five main sections of the prayer. The first invokes the Godhead, and requests peace; the second, a section of praise and thanksgiving. The third section, the “Domine” section, names God in various titles as “Lord”. The fourth section appeals to his nature as redeemer, and the final fifth section proclaims him Lord of all. (from The New Grove Italian Baroque Master, Denis Arnold)
Service Times are 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
