Week of Prayer for At-Risk Children Aug. 17-23
Aug 15, 2009
Week of Prayer for Children
Join FPC-Kingwood in a special prayer event as we take a week (Aug. 17-23) to pray for the vunerable At-Risk children in our community. Daily pray that all people will experience the gospel and come to know the love and forgiveness of Christ.
Day 1: Praying for the Children and Families of Many Nations in Houston
• Over 300 people groups and 140 nations represented make Houston the second most diverse city in the U.S. Thank God for the diversity He brings to our city, and pray for Him to give us His heart for the nations that each family and each child will have opportunity to experience the gospel story in his/her heart language. (John 3:16)
Day 2: Praying for the Children and Families in Poverty
• 24% of children in Harris County live in poverty while 47% live in lower income families. Pray for God to give us His heart for the poor and that we may learn to minister to the poor as if it were unto Christ. (Isaiah 58:6-8; Matthew 25:37-40)
Day 3: Praying Concerning the Increasing Infant Mortality Rate in Our City
• Since 2000, the infant mortality rate in Harris County has increased by 10% while it declined in the nation at large. Pray that infants in our city will receive the quality care that they need and that God would raise up men and women to champion the cause of infants. (Psalm 139:13-18; Psalm 82:3)
Day 4: Praying to End Human Trafficking
• Houston has been named a hub for human trafficking (forced labor or sexual activity), and the majority of victims are women and children. Pray for victims to be rescued, for trafficking rings to be broken, for law enforcement agencies to have power and necessary resources, and for the church to stand united against this evil. (Psalm 146:7)
Day 5: Praying for our Educators and the Educational Systems
• Educators and others concerned continue to struggle with effective methods to reduce the drop-out rate in HISD which some reports have estimated to be as high as 50%. Pray for all children of every economic status, every culture, and every language to receive the basic educational skills needed to break the cycle of poverty; pray for and encourage the teachers and educators who guide them; and pray for mentors from the churches to commit to serve in our public school systems. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Day 6: Praying for Parents of At-Risk Children
• While 82% of children in low-income families in Texas have at least one working parent, families continue to struggle with poverty-related issues. Pray that these families will receive the assistance and encouragement needed to rise above a poverty level income and that the church will find effective ways to reach and strengthen these families. (Mark 10:13-16)
Day 7: Praying for Advocacy Groups of Children at Risk
• The Greater Houston Area has a number of people, programs, and organizations who faithfully serve the needs of at-risk and vulnerable children. Thank God for every person, organization and congregation who is serving, advocating, and “standing in the gap” for all those whom the gospel describes as “the least of these,” and pray that God will daily raise up additional individuals in the church to join in these advocacy efforts. (Psalm 68:4-6; John 12:26)
