Committees
First Presbyterian Church-Kingwood is strengthened by our congregation of selfless individuals who give of their time and talent by serving on the Church’s many committees. The work of these committees is truly what keeps our church running and we are pleased that we have a wealth of talented helpers. We encourage our members to serve on one or more committees each year, so please email us at if you would like to participate.

1. Worship
Worship at FPC-Kingwood is centered on the person of Jesus Christ, in whom we come to know the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Old and New Testament scriptures are read, a relevant sermon is preached, hymns and songs are sung, and all come before God in prayer. Holy Communion is offered on the first Sunday of the month. The sacrament of Baptism is administered at any of our services.
Traditional Service at 8:25 AM and 11:05 AM
This service offers the opportunity to participate in a traditional Presbyterian order of worship that includes entering God's presence, listening to God's word, and responding to God's call. We enter God's presence with a hymn of praise, a prayer of confession, an assurance of God's pardon for our sins, and the passing of the peace. We listen to God's word in lessons from the Old and New Testaments and a sermon that interprets the meaning of the lessons for our lives. We respond to God's call to live out what we have heard as we confess our faith together, receive an offering for God's work among us, sing a hymn of dedication and receive a benediction that sends us forth in God's name. Our choir accompanied and enhanced by a 60 rank Redmond organ, grand piano, and additional orchestral instrumentation occasionally participating in special services, brings outstanding choral music into each of our traditional services that enriches and deepens our sense of God's presence with us in worship.
Contemporary Service at 9:45 AM
This service offers the opportunity to participate in a contemporary worship experience that includes songs of worship and praise, a time for greeting each other, a time for prayer, a biblically based message designed to help people dig down deep into the Scripture and apply it to their lives, an offering given to God's mission being done in the world through us, a closing charge to go out and live what we've heard and a final worship song. Our band brings a rich sound to each contemporary worship service that lifts people into God's presence in heartfelt worship.
Worship Committee
The Worship Committee provides the surroundings for worship and encourages all to participate fully and regularly. Time is one of our most precious gifts. The ministry of the church depends on the membership not only attending worship and Church School, and being a faithful steward, but also serving in the church and community. Our worship activities exist to help you explore and understand the love of Jesus. As you discover Christ's love for you through worship, we pray that you will come to know Jesus personally. We believe that a relationship with Him gives our lives purpose and direction, enabling us to become all God created us to be. Our goal as a church, in fact, is to introduce people to Jesus Christ wherever they are. Christ's love is unconditional, welcoming all people regardless of their religious background or personal history. At FPC-Kingwood, we try to extend God's grace to every member and visitor, knowing that we all share the same need for hope, renewal, forgiveness and new beginnings. When we worship with our whole heart and soul and mind and strength, worship transforms us. It takes us from where we are to where God wants us to be next. On the top of the mountain as they worshiped him Jesus came to the eleven disciples, then he spoke to them. It was grace of course that he came to them at all for all of them were failed followers. But he came to them just as they were and he spoke to them and he shared his vision with them and Jesus will do the same thing for us if we will come together to worship him here in this church.
Worship Committee Activities
Lay Leaders Gus Watkins and Sam Lindley
Our Presbyterian denomination puts a strong emphasis on the lay members of our church, through responsibilities as church officers (Elders), the nurturing support of Deacons, and the participation in church services through Lay Leaders, the choir, and others. The Lay Leader at each of the Traditional services supports the pastoral staff in leading the service by leading the Prayer of Confession, the Old Testament or Epistle lesson, and participating in other parts of the service, such as baptism. The Worship Committee contacts that identify and organize the Lay Leaders can be contacted directly, if you would like to participate in this manner in our services. Gus Watkins coordinates the 8:25 service, while Sam Lindley coordinates the 11:05 service.
Sanctuary Guild Brenda Boyd
This is a volunteer group of church members, led by Brenda Boyd of the Worship Committee. This group maintains the beautification of the Sanctuary, with weekly rotation to replenish supplies in the pew racks, changing of altar cloths, making sure wax and other stains are cleaned from the pews, etc. We also do two seasonal cleanings of all pew cushions before the Christmas and Easter services. Individuals, as well as couples, participate in this service for our Church. Contact Brenda Boyd if you are interested in participating in this activity.
Sanctuary Flowers Joyce Gould
For the enhancement and beautification of our sanctuary during Sunday services, and as a means for our members to recognize special personal occasions, such as anniversaries, remembrances, birthdays, etc., flower arrangements may be donated, with recognition in the Sunday bulletin, for these specific events. Joyce Gould coordinates these weekly flowers and the special Easter lilies and Christmas poinsettias for the Worship Committee. She may be contacted directly or through the church office, if you would like to donate.
Advent Readers Rachel Harlin
Worship preparations begin for Advent Readers in mid November. Readers, usually an entire family unit, are identified for lighting the advent candles and reading the devotional, normally for the two Traditional services at 8:25 and 11:05. Children in the family are encouraged to participate. The Contemporary service identifies the readers for 9:45. The readings are collected by the pastor's staff and the Worship contact prepares a packet for each couple or family unit. The Worship contact for Advent Readers is Rachel Harlin, and she may be contacted directly or through the church office, if you are interested in participating in this meaningful part of our Advent services.
Communion Set-up Lori Stout
The Communion Service to the congregation is facilitated by a member of the Worship Committee and volunteers that help in that service. The organization and supply of the blood and body of Christ to the congregation servers is important to our observance of this sacrament. Lori Stout coordinates this activity and may be contacted if you would like to participate.
Communion servers Patsy Clegg and Barb Hale
Usually the first Sunday of each Month is designated as Communion Sunday. At each of the traditional services, deacons, elders, and their spouses have the opportunity to serve communion to people in the congregation at the 8:25 and the 11:05 services. Communion is offered by intinction at the contemporary service and servers come from the pastoral staff and participants of that service. Communion is also offered at some of the Christmas Eve and Easter (Holy Week) services. Helping with this sacrament of sharing the blood and body of Christ, personally enriches the worship experience. If, as an elder, deacon, or a spouse of one, you would like to be a part of this service to our church, as well as personally experience the joy of serving, contact Patsy Clegg for the 8:25 service or Barbara Hale for the 11:05 service.
Easter special services Vy Trusdale
Our Holy Week services begin on Palm Sunday, usually by providing many memorial Easter lilies for the sanctuary and with the distribution of palm branches, and continue through the Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday services. These services are enhanced through special music and worship activities with a cross and appropriate drapes, as well as communion. The Easter Sunday service concludes the week with the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Vy Trusdale and Jim Morris coordinate the many activities that occur during the week. If you are interested in participating in these activities, contact them directly or Joyce Gould for flower donations.
Greening of Church Robin Cassell
For the Christmas season, our church is transformed into a special worship environment beginning with Advent and concluding with Epiphany. This is done through the use of the Chrismon Tree and many Christmas greens and Christmas poinsettias to adorn various parts of our church buildings. The hand made ornaments of the tree sparkle from the many lights, and make a truly meaningful worship space. The Greening of the Church is done by numbers of volunteer church members and is coordinated by Robin Cassell. If you would like to participate in these activities, contact Robin.
Ushers Roger Eddy
The Ushers in our church are a dedicated group of members and deacons that help to facilitate the execution of the various worship services. They are depended upon to help with seating, collecting prayer cards, serving the offering plates, and returning the sanctuary to order at the conclusion of each service. Roger Eddy, the Deacon contact for Worship Committee, coordinates this group and may be contacted if you are interested in serving.
Kid's Church 11:05 AM in Fellowship Hall
Kid's Church is a program designed to fill the need of worship for children at their level, in their words and for their understanding. We feel that it is valuable for your children to worship with you. Children 4 years old through third grade are invited to attend Kid's Church after they have been dismissed from the adult worship service. If you are attending a class during the 11:05 service you may bring your child to the Kid's Church Team before you go to your class. Volunteers are always welcome to help out. Children have led the church in worship through centuries. Only they can bring a distinctive blend of spontaneity, enthusiasm, and pure joy to the worship of God. The primary goal of the children's music ministry is to enable each child to worship God effectively through the combined efforts of Christian education and the ministry of music. We encourage spiritual growth through the children's music ministry as they express their faith through the songs they sing. This process leads to public witness through participation in worship.

GO!
As FPC-Kingwood Senior Pastor Dr. Jim Davis has told us, the first word in the Great Commission is "Go." Jesus didn't say "Stay," "Sit," "Do nothing," "Remain isolated," or "Keep to yourself.” He said "Go,” as in "Go out", "Seek others," "Get outside your four walls." Want to know how to do that? "Go" out and invite someone to church...and then bring them! Go to your neighbor's house, go to your child's preschool, go to your place of work. Invite someone to our church family so that they might hear God's word.
The Evangelism Committee is seeking those who feel called to "Go!" and to help others "Go!" Consider joining us on All Committee Night, the 3rd Monday of every month (beginning in January) at 7:30 p.m. in the Christian Education Wing. Or contact any of the following for more information:
Patrick Capriotti, ;
Yup Kim ;
Greg Olson, ; or

6. Finance/ Stewardship Committee
Our congregation’s love for Christ, for the words of the Great Commission and for the church is evident in generosity–thank you for your continued financial support! FPC-Kingwood couldn’t do it without you.
The Finance/Stewardship committee manages donated funds and designates them to the appropriate area. The continued increase in contributions, for example, has resulted in FPC-Kingwood’s increasing growth into a missional church.. There are opportunities for every person in our church to be involved in God’s mission in our world, at home and abroad and we hope members will take advantage of these occasions.
Stewardship is more than giving money to a church; it’s about being faithful disciples and caring for and managing all that God has given us. Stewardship asks us to evaluate how we can be good caretakers of the created world and of how we can best serve God as Disciples of Christ. To help FPC-Kingwood in Finance/Stewardship, contact committee members:
- Ted Harper;
- John Thurmond; or
- Jeff Diamond.
To donate to the church, please contact the main office at 281.360.5555. In addition to monetary contributions, FPC-Kingwood gladly accepts donated items and stock which can be transferred using the following forms: Download Stock Transfer Form »
7. Missions
Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Matthew 25: 37-42
FPC-Kingwood is an action-oriented mission church that participates in mission work in our community, our country and around the world. Peru, Mexico, Philadelphia, Jacksonville – all places that are better off due to the hard work and commitment of our members.
Wherever FPC-Kingwood members go, they are constantly seeking to honor God through the passionate worship of God and compassion for others. They provide food for the hungry, buildings for the needy and fellowship for the lonely. Through their work, our members:
- Learn about the work and witness of local faith communities;
- Build relationships with area Christians, other people of faith, and with each other;
- Serve with members of the local community to meet local needs;
- Experience another context in which the Christian faith is practiced;
- Worship with local congregations; and
- Reflect on the mission team experience in light of the gospel.
